The Nakuru County Government plans to enhance water availability in the region by drilling additional boreholes. The County Water Engineer, Paul Muhuhe, announced this initiative during the commissioning of the Murichu and Legetio water projects in Rongai Sub-county. Muhuhe emphasized the far-reaching impact of water on various sectors of the economy, including agriculture, livestock farming, employment, health, education, manufacturing, and tourism.
The project aims to benefit over 800 households in Visoi Ward, alleviating the long-standing water scarcity in the area. Upon completion, it will also provide water to public schools, a dispensary, shopping centers, and the Murichu market.
Hellen Megek, the area MCA, highlighted Rongai Sub-county’s potential to address food scarcity in the county due to its fertile soil and warm climate conducive to crop growth. She emphasized the importance of water in agriculture, a key player in the county’s economy, leading to increased productivity, crop diversification, and income generation.
Engineer Muhuhe underscored the significance of adequate water supply for livestock farming in Rongai, ensuring animal well-being, hydration, and supporting fodder and pasture growth. He also emphasized the essential role of clean and safe water in maintaining community health, personal hygiene, and reducing waterborne diseases.
However, environmental activist Julius Maina expressed concerns about excessive drilling without proper management, warning of potential depletion of groundwater resources for both human and agricultural use. He highlighted the environmental impact of drilling, including energy consumption and carbon emissions. Maina urged counties to prioritize rainwater harvesting, forest protection, and river pollution mitigation efforts.
