The commencement of the Malaba-Bungoma water project has brought a sense of relief to the residents of Bungoma and Busia counties. This multi-million shilling project, co-funded by the Kenyan government and the African Development Bank with an investment of Sh690 million, started in 2020 and was successfully completed in January 2024.
Governor Kenneth Lusaka of Bungoma County highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating that it aims to provide fresh water to over 180,000 residents in Teso North, Bungoma West, and Bumula constituencies. The project involves the construction of a water intake point at Ndakaru along the Malakisi River, accompanied by a conventional water treatment plant.
To enhance accessibility, the government is committed to a Last Mile Connectivity (Water Supply) project, which is estimated to cost an additional Sh300 million, with a detailed design already prepared.
Governor Lusaka emphasized the transformative impact of the project, not only addressing immediate water scarcity but also unlocking broader socio-economic development potential for the region. The completion of the Malaba-Bungoma water project marks a significant milestone in the lives of residents who have long struggled with water shortages.
